    NMHDS SC background

    The National Mental Health Data Set Subcommittee (NMHDSSC provides technical advice about mental health data to the Mental Health Information Strategy Standing Committee (MHISSC).

    The NMHDS SC brings together jurisdictional representatives and members with relevant technical expertise in mental health data systems. The committee was established to oversee the development and implementation of the Mental Health Care National Minimum Data Sets (NMDSs) to address the information requirements of the National Mental Health Strategy.

     

    Reporting structure

    The NMHDS SC reports to MHISSC. MHISSC in turn reports to the Mental Health, Drug and Alcohol Principal Committee (MHDAPC) of the Australian Health Ministers’ Advisory Council (AHMAC).     Terms of Reference

    The NMHDS SC provides expert technical advice for consideration by MHISSC.

    The National Mental Health Data Set Subcommittee will:

    • Develop and improve the following three existing Mental Health Care NMDSs:
      • Community Mental Health Care NMDS
      • Residential Mental Health Care NMDS
      • Mental Health Establishments NMDS
    • Monitor and evaluate the implementation of the Mental Health Care NMDSs, including addressing data quality issues.
    • Monitor developments of the Admitted Patient Mental Health Care NMDS.
    • Monitor and evaluate the implementation of the National Outcomes and Casemix Collection (NOCC).
    • Report and make recommendations to MHISSC on a regular basis regarding progress in the development, implementation, evaluation and improvement of the Mental Health Care NMDSs.
    • Provide a forum for detailed consultation with jurisdictional representatives to inform the development, implementation, evaluation and improvement of the Mental Health Care NMDSs and other national Mental Health data collections as appropriate.
    • Obtain MHISSC approval prior to any Mental Health Care NMDS data development proposals being forwarded for consideration by the National Health Information Standard and Statistics Committee (NHISSC), prior to endorsement by the National Health Information and Performance Principal Committee (NHIPPC)

    Membership

    Specialist and diverse knowledge is required on the NMHDS SC. NMHDS SC members will bring with them a wide range of experience in issues related to mental health. The membership of the NMHDS SC is endorsed annually by MHISSC.

    The current membership of the NMHDS SC consists of:

    • The Chair, a member of the MHISSC and NMHDSSC, appointed by the MHISSC.
    • State and territory jurisdictional representatives.
    • Australian Institute of Health and Welfare (AIHW).
    • Commonwealth Department of Health (Health).
    • Australian Mental Health Outcomes and Classification Network (AMHOCN).
